Arsenal set for seven-figure windfall due to secret transfer clause in striker deal

Arsenal are set to reap a seven-figure windfall from Mika Biereth's impending move to AS Monaco.

The Gunners sold Biereth, 21, to Sturm Graz for £4 million in the summer in what was a club record signing for the Austrian team. However, this deal contained a number of clauses, including a significant sell-on percentage.

Biereth is now set to move to Ligue 1 after a fine start to the 2024/25 season. Monaco have agreed to pay £10.8m upfront for the Austrian Bundesliga's top scorer, plus a further £1.75m in add-ons.

And as confirmed by The Standard, this means Arsenal are set to bank well over a million pounds if Biereth completes his move to the French giants.

Biereth failed to make a senior appearance for Arsenal in the Premier League before moving on this summer, but was a big hit for Sturm Graz, plundering eleven league goals in just sixteen games this season.

He enjoyed a successful loan spell in Austria during the second half of last season with the club, who then pushed to sign him permanently.

The Gunners have benefited from a number of similar deals in recent years, including those involving former academy graduate Omari Hutchinson when he joined Ipswich Town from Chelsea in the summer transfer window.

Although Biereth is making a big move in January, it remains to be seen whether Mikel Arteta and the Arsenal hierarchy will do anything substantial this month to boost their hopes of beating Liverpool to the Premier League title.

Arteta recently refused to rule out the prospect of doing business, saying: “Right now it's looking after the players and getting the best out of them.

“Right now our focus is on our players. I really love my players and I believe in what we have because there is a lot of quality and dedication.”

Then he added: “Let's see. If there is an opportunity, we will look at it.”
