Arsenal star to “LEAVE after 6 years” for chiefs’ decision not to renew contract

Kieran Tierney is reportedly set to leave Arsenal after six years at the club, following bosses' decision not to give him a new contract.

The Scot joined the Gunners from Celtic in 2019 after coming through the ranks at his boyhood club.

The left-back established himself well in the Emirates, making 27 Premier League appearances in the 2020/21 season, 22 in the 2021/22 season and 27 the following year.

But he was loaned out to Real Sociedad last season as Mikel Arteta wanted to take his side to the next level and instead favored the likes of Oleksandr Zinchenko and Jakub Kiwior.

This season has been plagued by a hamstring injury sustained in the opening match of his country's Euro 2024 campaign. He returned to the bench last month and even started Wednesday's EFL Cup win over Crystal Palace, but was again let off with a knock.

Now Tierney's departure from the club appears to be imminent, with Arsenal's top brass rejecting the chance to extend his contract for another year, reports David Ornstein of The Athletic.

The 27-year-old's contract expires in June and the date for the Gunners to add an extra 12 months to his spell has passed.

This leaves the Scot free to negotiate with foreign parties from January, with the possibility of an immediate move.

There is interest from English clubs and the romantic option of a return to Celtic to reunite with his old team.

It is believed that his stay in Spain also opened potential ties there.

Tierney made his 125th appearance for Arsenal in the 3-2 win over Crystal Palace on Wednesday, but was replaced by Arteta after 69 minutes.

In that time, the full-back has scored five goals and set up 13 goals for his teammates. He won the FA Cup at the end of his first season at the club.

The Gunners survived a late scare against the Eagles in the EFL Cup to march further in the tournament after Gabriel Jesus ended a 10-month goal drought with a spectacular hat-trick.

The visitors had shocked Mikel Arteta's men early in the encounter, who were much changed from their Premier League stalemate against Everton and scored within three minutes through Jean-Philippe Mateta, who slotted a ball home over the top .

After a boring opening period, the Spaniard then brought out the big guns. Captain Martin Odegaard and centre-back William Saliba went into battle in an attempt to turn things around.

The changes worked. Dean Henderson had to make an excellent save from Sterling's effort from close range before the Englishman hit the crossbar.

But minutes later their frustrations came to an end when Odegaard slipped Jesus through and the Brazilian tipped the ball over the keeper.

He was also clinical as he gave Arsenal the lead after being found by substitute Bukayo Saka, before completing his hat-trick after an accurate pass from Odegaard. Former Gunners striker Eddie Nketiah grabbed a consolation with a header.
