Arsenal step up Gyokeres chase with two preferred targets proving problematic

Arsenal wants to sign a new striker in the summer and Andrea Berta, who replaced Edu as sports director of the Gunners, would be a big fan of Viktor Gyokees

Arsenal reportedly staged their interest in Viktor Gyokeres after Andrea Berta was confirmed as the new sports director of the club. Berta, who previously played the same role in Atletico Madrid, replaces Edu after leaving the Emirates in November.

And Berta will have to hit the ground with Arsenal set for a hugely important summer of transfer activity. A new striker is at the top of the shopping list, with the bid of the Gunners' Premier League title Hapert after both Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz had sustained seasonal injuries.

Midfielder Mikel Merino has done an admirable work as an improvised Center-Forward, where four goals are delivered in seven games, but it is clear that a productive goal scorer is needed. According to a report for athletics, Gyokees is the top goals of Arsenal.

The report states that the Gunners are currently considering their options, with Gyokees, Alexander Isak and Benjamin Sesko all on their list. However, Newcastle does not have the desire to sell Isak and it would cost a 'huge compensation' for them to consider cash in.

Gunners -Baas Mikel Arteta is a big fan of the Sweden International, but he still has more than three years from his current contract. Arsenal tried to sign Sesko last summer before the 21-year-old eventually signed a new deal with RB Leipzig.

They could visit their interest in the Slovenian again this summer, but the report states that it is 'unclear whether they will continue with a move' and a number of other clubs also consider a dive for Sesko.

As a result, Gyokees has emerged as a 'more prominent candidate' and it is said that he has been 'admired' by Berta for a long time. Gyokeres has been one of the most productive goal scorers in the world since he came to Sporting from Coventry in 2023.

He scored 85 goals in 92 performances in all competitions and admitted earlier this season that he hopes to play for “one of the best teams in Europe”. When asked for his future prior to the January transfer window, Gyoke told Marca: “We will see it.

“There are many rumors to circulate, but we are in the middle of the season, there are many months left. We will see when the time will happen.

“My goal? To play for one of the best teams in Europe. That is the goal. It has sometimes been difficult. I played in the championship for many seasons.

“It is a very good and tough competition, but it is clear that I have always wanted to play in an important competition.”

Arsenal tried to sign a new attacker in January, but a bid for Ollie Watkins was rejected by Aston Villa, while a loan for AC Milan striker Alvaro Morata was considered before he made the switch to Galatasaray.
