The Gunners look set to invest in a new striker as the January transfer window approaches and manager Mikel Arteta is keen to add an attacking threat.
Newcastle United's Alexander Isak and Sporting Lisbon's Viktor Gyokeres were high on the shopping list, but Italy's CalcioMercato report that the Gunners sent scouts to see Retegui in action in November and have been very impressed.
They were present for Atalanta's 6-1 Champions League win against Young Boys, with the forward bagging a brace that has helped him to 14 goals in all competitions this season.
He is the top scorer in Serie A and could be a smarter move as Manchester United are reportedly pursuing Gyokeres and Barcelona retain their interest in Isak, who scored a hat-trick against Ipswich Town last weekend.
Arsenal remain third in the Premier League after their 5-1 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday and despite their excellent performance, Arteta recently spoke about how the January window could be the perfect time to improve his squad.
“This window gives us the opportunity to strengthen the team if we think it is necessary and we believe we have the capacity to do so.
“We are working on it and just have to assess the situation as it changes every week. Not for the better at the moment, but I am confident that in a few weeks we will be in a better place.”
