Arsenal transfer news: Arteta misses out on two deals as target told to push

Arsenal appear to be back on track ahead of the hectic festive schedule and January transfer window.

The Gunners are aiming to finally end their 20-plus year wait for the Premier League title and for once they look set to beat Manchester City. But they follow Arne Slot's Liverpool at the top, heading into the Christmas matches.

It remains to be seen whether Mikel Arteta and co will look for major reinforcements in January. In theory, they should have the money needed to sign another striker after keeping their powder dry in the summer, but Arsenal's hierarchy could decide to wait until the end of the season given the January's notoriously difficult period.

With the transfer window just weeks away, Mirror Football rounds up all the latest transfer news and gossip from the Emirates…

Arteta turned into a child prodigy

Manchester United have beaten Arsenal to two transfer targets after completing deals for Emmanuel Ziro and Diego Lyon.

Ziro confirmed earlier this week that he had signed for United despite interest from Arsenal and Chelsea, as reported in The Evening Standard.

And the Gunners are also said to be interested in Lyon, who are set to join United from Cerro Porteno. The 18-year-old left back will officially take office in the coming days for 8 million euros.

The shooters' target was told to move

Glen Johnson believes Arsenal transfer goalkeeper Xavi Simons would flourish in the Premier League if he makes the move from Paris Saint-Germain.

“For his size he is quite physical and technically very good, so I believe he is the type of player who would flourish in the Premier League,” Johnson told Betfred about Simons, who has been linked with Arsenal several times.

“He plays at the highest level, for a good team and we always say it's risky to sign a player who has never played in the Premier League, but with a player like him I don't think it's at all is risky.

“£66 million isn't that bad for a player who is going to be knocking on the door for a starting place in the team.”

Arteta drops the transfer hint

Mikel Arteta has left the door open for Arsenal to add to their squad in the upcoming transfer window.

The Gunners boss was asked about possible issues during his press conference ahead of Arsenal's match with Everton this weekend.

And while he stressed he didn't expect January to be particularly busy, he teased: “I never expect January to be super busy, but there are always a few surprises. Hopefully the squad availability will be better in recent weeks .”
