Arsenal transfer news: Mikel Arteta’s Alexander Isak plan emerges as Man Utd move for target

Although supporters are keeping a close eye on the transfer this month, it is a completely different story for the players and staff at Arsenal.

The Gunners – who are still battling on four fronts – have a whopping NINE games remaining in January, with matches in every competition before February arrives. The defeat to Newcastle in the Carabao Cup followed a Premier League draw against Brighton, leaving fans increasingly concerned about the second half of the season.

There is a belief that reinforcements – especially up front – may be needed to finally help Mikel Arteta's side get over the line, both in the league and cup competitions.

But major takeovers look increasingly unlikely as Arteta largely wants to hold on to what he has. That hasn't stopped the rumors though and here are some of the latest developments surrounding the Gunners.

The Isak plan emerges

Arsenal's lack of a recognized striker could not have been more apparent in Tuesday night's defeat to Newcastle, which saw the Gunners rue a number of missed chances. And that the ruthless Alexander Isak was the man to help Newcastle capitalize on that debauchery was not lost on the supporters.

The Sweden international, who is in the form of his life for the Magpies, has been regularly touted as a target for Arsenal, even during his time at Real Sociedad.

He was linked again last summer, but Arteta opted not to make a big impact in the striking department. That appears to be changing this year… but almost certainly NOT in January.

Mail Sport reports that Arsenal are likely to revive interest in Isak, but not until the end of the season. There is understanding that the striker could cost in excess of £100m, but after a relatively economical summer in 2024 that may not be out of the question.

January's most likely signing?

But while a high-profile arrival seems unlikely at this point, there is a chance Arteta could move into the market to provide cover for the injured Bukayo Saka.

The England international faces an extended spell on the sidelines after tearing his hamstring, leaving a gaping hole in the Gunners' forward line. 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri impressed in his absence but also picked up an injury after scoring in the 1-1 draw against Brighton last weekend.

That could force Arteta into the market for a 'stop-gap' replacement for Saka, according to the Daily Mail, and that is in fact the most likely signing of the January window.

Man Utd in race for Mbeumo

Manchester United have become the latest club to show interest in Arsenal target and Brentford striker Bryan Mbeumo. The Bees striker has been in brilliant form for the Bees this season, scoring thirteen goals in 23 appearances.

That form has alerted Arsenal to a possible transfer, albeit similar to Isak, which would likely take place during the summer window.

And now United, desperate for more firepower under new boss Ruben Amorim, have thrown their hat into the ring. The Star reports that the Red Devils are considering a £40million bid at the end of the season, while Newcastle are also interested.

It is understood Brentford have no intention of selling their top scorer this month, with the player himself unwilling to push for a move in the middle of the campaign.
