Arsenal’s dream new XI with £83m striker signed and Saka back in contention

The calls for Arsenal to splash the cash in January have only increased as injuries wreak havoc at the Emirates Stadium.

Bukayo Saka has been sidelined for weeks, while breakout star Ethan Nwaneri is also on the sidelines. Arsenal have also been dealt another blow, with Gabriel Jesus likely to miss the rest of the season.

With Arsenal only four points behind number one Liverpool after their win over Tottenham, some new signings could go a long way in maintaining their title challenge. A number of positions could potentially use reinforcement.

Fortunately, there appears to be plenty of work behind the scenes in North London. Take a look at what Arsenal's squad could look like in the second half of the season, if all of Arteta's wishes come true.

Let's start with the attack where the Gunners could potentially spend the most money. Jesus' long-term injury has exacerbated the need for a new striker – and there are a few candidates.

Benjamin Sesko, Alexander Isak and Bryan Mbeumo are among the strikers who have been linked with a move to the Gunners. But Arteta appears to have found his man in the form of Sporting Lisbon hitman Viktor Gyokeres.

Reports in France have suggested that Arsenal are now ready to activate the £83m release clause included in his contract. And there is no doubt he would be a brilliant signing after scoring 32 goals in 30 games this season.

There could also be an addition on the left flank. Arsenal have long been admirers of Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams and like Gyokeres, he has a release clause that the Gunners can activate.

Williams has not yet made a decision on his future, but North London appears to be leading the race for his services. He would be an excellent addition on the left, with Saka expected to return in the latter stages of the season.

Moving to midfield, there could be a big addition in midfield as well. Arsenal are closing in on the future signing of Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, according to reports.

The Spaniard will make his move official this summer, but the Gunners are still keen to welcome him to the club this month. He would be alongside Declan Rice if a move were to be completed. Captain Martin Odegaard would complete a formidable midfield.

In defense, it is unlikely that any changes will occur in the coming months. Jurrien Timber is finally showing his true form after last summer's transfer, with Riccardo Calafiori on the other side.

William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes have built an incredible partnership over the past few seasons and that is unlikely to change unless someone leaves for big money. Arteta also appears to have found his long-term goalkeeper option in David Raya.

Arsenal's potential XI: Raya; Wood, Saliba, Gabriel, Calafiori; Rice, Zubimendi, Odegaard; Saka, Gyokeres, Williams.
