Arteta responds to Arsenal’s Watkins transfer interest – ‘I’m very confident’

Mikel Arteta insists that he retains confidence in the transfer team of Arsenal, while the Gunners want to bring in a new striker before the end of the window.

The Gunners have been looking for a new attacking option in the past month, but for the Transfer Deadline on Monday evening they still have to make an addition this winter.

The need for more firepower has increased with Gabriel Jesus, who has sustained a seasonal front cruciate ligament injury and Bukayo Saka is still sidelined with a serious hamstring problem, and the gunners have now been associated with a movement for Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins in the closure Days of the window.

Speaking before Sunday's visit to Manchester City Arteta would not be specifically attracted to Watkins, but insisted that those in the corridors of power in the Emirates Stadium still do everything they can to make the right movements.

“I have very faith in the work that the club does and we explore every chance,” he said. “We try everything we can.

“We have the ambition and the goal of trying to help the team, support the team to get better and end the season strongly. We try to do that actively.”

Arteta was subsequently pressed to the question of whether an experienced attacker such as England International Watkins, 29, or a younger option would be a better one, but the Gunners -Baas says he is not thinking about age when considering new signing sessions.

“We don't really look at the market in those terms,” he said. “We look at what we have in the team, what we are missing and who can bring something that may make us much better.

“Regardless of age or the background they have, is a real conviction that a player can really be good for us.”

Arteta added that the Gunners have an injury doubt about goalkeeper David Raya prior to the city visit after the Spanish international had missed the midweek trip to Girona in the Champions League.

“David, we are still insecure,” said Arteta. “We have another session tomorrow. We have 48 hours, so we will have to see it.”
