Arteta singles out Arsenal star who didn’t score in PSV thrashing

MyLes Lewis-Skelly was praised by Mikel Arteta after Arsenal's banging 7-1 victory over PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League, even though he was replaced before the break.

The Gunners tore their opponents apart in the Netherlands to stop Jurrien Timber, Ethan Nwaneri, Mikel Merino, Martin Odegaard (twice), Leandro Trossard and Riccardo Calafiori in the quarter -finals of the Champions League.

It was a memorable night for Arteta and Co that comes in the midst of a challenging period in the Premier League, where they fell 13 points behind Liverpool at the top.

Their chances of going deep into the most important competition of Europe, however, look good, after they have become the first team in the history of the Champions League that removes seven goals from home in a knockout match. But it was not only those on the score sheet praised by Arteta after the game.

The Spaniard brought tribute to the role that Lewis-Skelly played in one of the goals while he was lyrical about the team's display and said: “There were a few players today, we are ready to take the initiative. If you come to this stage, you really have to play and keep the game and take the initiative and go for it.

“And today we have a full-back in Myes that makes a cross for the opposite winger; you have Jurrien a header like a full back and you have Richy [Riccardo Calafiori] With the movement of a nine and scoring with his right foot, that's what I'm talking about – Flow, courage and play as we want to play. “

While Lewis-Skelly was praised for setting up Nwaneri for the second goal of Arsenal, the young left back was withdrawn in the 34th minute after a second yellow card for a failed challenge on Richard Ledezma was nevertheless avoided.

After the game, Arteta admitted that the decision to turn Lewis-Skelly was precautions and explained: “I didn't see the second action, but if there is so much noise, you play away from home, I didn't want to take any risk.”

While Lewis-Skelly was taken out of the shooting line, Timber is now running the risk of a suspension in Europe after being shown his second yellow of the tournament.

A further booking for the semi -final would see him landing a suspension of one competition.
