Ollie Watkins celebrated his 29th birthday with a goal and an assist, but his Aston Villa side were defeated by Brighton in a hard-fought Premier League match.
The draw extended Brighton's seven-match winless run, despite the Seagulls scoring first in the 12th minute through Simon Adingra's curling try during the break.
After being denied a penalty moments earlier, Villa were awarded one in the 36th minute after a four-minute video assistant referee (VAR) effort.
Referee Craig Pawson was called to the pitch monitor to confirm that Brighton striker Joao Pedro Morgan had caught Rogers in the area just after Lucas Digne had saved a low shot.
Watkins leveled when he sent goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen the wrong way with a confident penalty on his return to the starting line-up.
Villa completed a fine second-half comeback in the second half when Watkins tapped a lovely ball over the top, which Rogers collected and buried in the bottom corner.
But they were unable to hold on for a fifth win in seven games in all competitions as Brighton full-back Tariq Lamptey leveled in the 81st minute with a driven finish past Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez.
The home side remained ninth in the table, three points clear of fifth, which could be enough to qualify for the Champions League this season.
Brighton, which won only once in fifteen away games at Villa, remained in tenth place.
