Aston Villa completed a comfortable passage to a quarterfinals of the Champions League with Paris St-Germain after cruising to victory against Club Brugge in Villa Park.
Match report
The side of Unai Emery was in an excellent position because they protected a 3-1 advantage against the first stage in Belgium, so that the draw was brought out of the reach of the visitors after the half-time introduction of on-lan Talisman Marco Asensio.
A risk-free first 45 minutes was only remarkable for Club Brugge defender Kyriani Sabbe's 16th minute red card for the withdrawal of Marcus Rashford while chasing the long clearance of keeper Emiliano Martinez.
Asensio, excellent since his arrival of PSG, secured villas passage in the last eight five minutes after the end of a neat finish of the smart pass by Leon Bailey.
Seven minutes later, Ian Maatsen added the second from close by, his first for the club, after good work by Morgan Rogers, after which Asensio added his second and Villas third after 61 minutes. It was a simple finish that was perfectly set up by Rashford.
It means that Emery and Asensio will both be confronted in the last eight of the Champions League with their former club, conquests of Liverpool, in the last 16 phase, in the last eight of the Champions League.
