Atletico Madrid considering withdrawing Metropolitano from 2030 World Cup bid

Although there has been a lot of debate around the locations and host cities for the World Cup 2030, the first to take place on three continents and with six host countries, the Grootstedano of Atletico Madrid was considered a given in terms of the bid of Spain. Los Rojiblancos, however, is considering withdrawing their land from the bid of Spain.

That is, according to Relo, who say that the idea was raised by the Atletico Majority shareholder Miguel Angel Gil Marin with the president of the Royal Spanish football federation (RFEF) Rafael Louzan during a meal. The RFEF would like to add Valencias Nou Mestalla, originally omitted before a deal was agreed to restart the work on the new stadium, as proof of the recovery of the Dana floods last year.

FIFA requires stadiums to be borrowed from them for more than a month before the tournament starts and for its duration, and explains the same exhaust valve that in the case of Atletico this would mean an important blow to their accounts. Los Colchoneros usually uses their stadium to organize concerts and events in the summer, and losing access for such a period can cost no less than € 20 million.

Gil Marin has shown the willingness for the Metropolitano to be the sacrificial lamb for the arrival of Nou Mestalla in the bid, which would solve a number of problems. If there is something, FIFA wants to reduce the number of Spanish locations, no longer adding. By allowing the Metropolitano, Valencia would take their place, and Atletico to maintain their income, both the club and the RFEF please.

Another factor is that the Santiago Bernabeu is probably mentioned as the host stadium for the final of the 2030 World Cup or the opening match. With Morocco who competes to organize the final, and Camp Nou also in the race for the biggest games, there is the chance that the Metropolitano would organize only one or two group competitions and a quarterfinals, despite the great loss of income.
