Atletico Madrid has become the first club to reach the semi-final of the 2024-25 Copa del Rey, after he had defeated Getafe 5-0 in the Metropolitano to continue their impressive form of recent months.
Diego Simeone chose not to go as strong as possible for the competition, apart from Cup goalkeeper Juan Musso who stepped in to Jan Oblak. This paid dividends in the early stages when Atleti raced in a lead of two goals after 17 minutes.
The opener came from Giuliano Simeone, who was a revelation for his father's side this season. Javi Galan, who doubted the game, delivered a cross from the left that ran over the goal through the winger, so that Getafe 'keeper Jiri Letacek will stay behind without a chance. He then scored the second of his evening and Athleti shortly after he was played by colleague Argentinian Rodrigo de Paul.
It would be even better for Athleti just before the break when they got their third. It came from Samuel Lino, who showed patience before cutting in and curled the ball into the far corner of Getafe's goal after he was set up by Julian Alvarez.
Simeone brought the will of Antoine Griezmann, Alvarez and Giuliano in the second half with the tie practically over, and it was the replacements that were combined for the last two goals of the evening. First, Conor Gallagher played in Angel Correa to bring the score to 4-0, before the Argentinian became the provider for Alexander Sorloth to score again when he came from the bank.
In the end, Atletico Madrid was far too strong for Getafe. It is now 19 wins in their last 21 games in all competitions, and understandably they will describe themselves as leading candidates to win the Copa del Rey, a trophy they have not won since the 2012-13 season. They are now looking forward to the semi-final, but first they take an exhausted Real Madrid in a huge La Liga-Showdown.
