It is no secret that Atletico Madrid is on the market for a new defensive midfielder and their newest target has been identified.
Atleti has been around more than 12 months after a pivot, but even though they were spent large last summer, they did not succeed in signing one. And their need for a new arrival could increase further in the coming weeks, given that Rodrigo de Paul could leave.
A number of goals have been identified, including Real Betis' Johnny Cardoso. But now a new name has been added to the shortlist: Enzo Barrenechea. As reported by enchanted side, Aston Villa is willing to give the green light to sell the Argentinian midfielder, who spent the season on loan in Valencia – where he is impressed.
Barrechechea also attracts interest from Valencia, Villarreal and Real Betis. Villa will probably have to sell the midfielder because of their PSR problems, and this can allow a more favorable deal to agree with those clubs that are interested in a summer agreement – this would be the case for Los Che, who probably cannot be big because of their financial problems.
On the other hand, Atleti would have more money to spend on Barrechechea, which will certainly give them an advantage. And the fact that Diego Simeone likes to sign players from his home country means that it would be no surprise to see an approach in the coming weeks.
It is still to be seen where Barrechea ends at the end of this summer's transfer window. At the moment there is a good chance that he will stay in La Liga, but it cannot be called where he will play, given that four clubs are interested in his services.
