Atletico Madrid picked up their first victory of the 2025 Club World Cup after a 3-1 win over Seattle Sounders over Lumen Field.
Diego Simeone's needed a response after he was hit 4-0 by the European Champions Paris Saint-Germain in their opening group phase match, and luckily they had a good start in Seattle. They succeeded in breaking the impasse after just 11 minutes when Pablo Barrios shot home through the bottom of the crossbar after a cut from Giuliano Simeone.
Atleti dominated the first half and they thought that a chance had come for their second just before the break when they got a penalty for an error on Simeone. But after Var -Control the decision was overthrown, to the great lighting of Seattle.
But only a few minutes in the second period, Athleti doubled their lead. A corner routine led Marcos Llorente to hit the bar, but from the rebound, Axel Witsel finally changed the ball into the back of the net.
However, it would not be easy for Athleti, because Seattle got a goal only a few minutes later when Albert Rusnak shot Jan Oblak. But luckily for Los Colchoneros, they were able to restore their lead of two goals at 55 minutes, and it was Barrios who scored his second of the game after volley and home on the back post.
Atleti could see a procedure from there, although there were a few hairy moments too late. Nevertheless, it was a trust -related result in front of Simeone. The result means that they will be 3rd in group B, but on points on points with PSG and Botafogo, which they play in their last group phase match on Monday.
