Atletico Madrid spent a lot of money last summer, and it is also expected that they will be busy again in the front of the transfer in 2025. In particular, there must be movements in the defense, with at least two departure expected.
During last summer's transfer window, Robin Le Normand and Clement Lenglet (loan) were brought in from Real Sociedad and Barcelona respectively. Even if the latter permanent before the beginning of the 2025-26 season, it is likely that at least one more central defender had to be added to the Diego Simeone team.
This is because Axel Witsel and Cesar Azpilicueta will both leave Athleti at the end of the season when their contracts end. It has already been decided that the two veterans are not offered renewal, so their presence in the team must be replaced.
Atleti could look at a familiar face to fill the void left by Witsel and Azpilicueta, as caught it has been reported that they are expected to host their interest in David Hancko, which was one of their leading transfer goals last summer. Los Colchoneros made several offers for the Slovak defender, but they were all rejected by Feyenoord, who succeeded in retaining his services for at least one season.
According to the report, Feyenoord value Hancko values € 50 million, which would be incredibly steep for Athleti – especially if they would sign Alex Baena, which will be available for a similar fee in the summer. To make things more complicated, it is also noted that Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are also enthusiastic about the 27-year-old, who can operate in both the left and in the middle of the defense.
It would certainly be very difficult for Atletico Madrid to bring in Hancko, although he would be a top signing. It will be interesting to see who they go in the summer when Witsel and Azpilicueta continue.
