DAN ASHWORTH was reportedly 'dragged' out of a hidden exit from Old Trafford after agreeing to leave Manchester United.
After just five months, the sporting director's time at the club comes to an end.
United went all out to add him to the boardroom this summer, paying Newcastle £3 million in compensation.
But following crucial discussions with CEO Omar Berrada following last night's 3-2 defeat to Nottingham Forest, Ashworth quit by “mutual consent”, according to a United statement.
The Manchester Evening News claims he trudged through the press room yesterday with a grim expression.
He was “escorted” through an “alternate exit” by a member of security and United Chief Operating Officer Collette Roche.
Ashworth was not exited via the usual director's entrance or the Stretford End tunnel.
Journalist Samuel Luckhurst wrote on social media: “In retrospect, he may have marched out with a frog.”
Ashworth and other senior club figures are responsible for handing Erik ten Hag a new contract, only to sack him fourteen games later.
And they were in charge of the summer transfer business, spending £200m on Leny Yoro, Manuel Ugarte, Matthijs De Ligt, Joshua Zirkzee and Noussair Mazraoui.
The 53-year-old boss claimed earlier this season that he 'liked' the team.
But SunSport exclusively revealed last month that the summer spending spree and Ten Hag's failure saw a blame game begin in the boardroom.
Crystal Palace chief Dougie Freedman is favorite to replace Ashworth having previously been linked with the job.
