Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has not confirmed whether Wojciech Szczesny will make his Copa del Rey debut as they take on Barbastro for the second year in a row on Saturday. He will also have to make do without Andreas Christensen.
Marc-Andre ter Stegen has been out for much of the season, while Lamine Yamal returned to group training this week and is reportedly aiming for a return in the Spanish Super Cup next Wednesday against Athletic Club. That is also the case for Ferran Torres, but otherwise Barcelona has a clean bill of health.
Christensen has been back training for several weeks after an Achilles tendon problem, but on Friday Flick explained that he also saw the Spanish Super Cup as a potential comeback date.
“Andreas is doing very well, he has increased his workload considerably, but it is still too early. He's coming with us to Saudi Arabia, and we'll see. But the plan is for us to stay with us after Saudi Arabia.”
Ter Stegen's replacement was Szczesny, nicknamed Tek, who was signed under an emergency injury ruling, who retired. Inaki Pena has since retained the number one spot, but it is suggested that Szczesny could get a chance in the Copa del Rey and possibly the Super Cup.
“Tek is training great, but we haven't made the decision yet. So we will wait and see,” said Flick.
