Barcelona is expected to be a busy summer, and although the signing of a right back is on the agenda, they also look at their attempt to strengthen the options that head coach Hansi Flick has at his disposal.
Barcelona Sporting Director Deco will be charged with tackling the needs of Flick's Squad, the most urgent positions of which are left and right. It also seems that central defense is an area that the Catalan club would like to strengthen-in particular it is a new left-sided middle behind.
Flick has made it clear that he would like to use a left central defender on the left, which is a reason for Inigo Martinez who is preferred over Ronald Arajo. But with the former real Sociedad and Athletic Club player who will turn 34 next month, he must be replaced in the coming years.
And in terms of successors, Barcelona has identified two at this stage – with Diario as a message that Piero Hincapie and Jhon Lucumi are both on the shortlist who has put together Deco.
Barcelona explored Lucumi during the recent 1-1 draw by Bologna against Napoli, and in December they found informal discussions with the representatives of the Colombian international. But at this stage it is Bayer Leverkusen Man Hincapie that is considered to be the preferred objective of the club for the left center-back position.
Hincapie was searched for by Atletico Madrid last summer, but Los Colchoneros cooled their interest in him – and instead they would view Lucumi next to Barcelona, as well as Inter Milan, AC Milan, Napoli and Roma.
It is still to consider whether Barcelona is focusing on the signing of Hincapie or Lucumi this summer, but it is a good idea to think about the addition of a new left -sided central defender, since it is a position they will soon need.
