Barcelona blasted for ‘whitewashing human rights violations’

Barcelona has come for criticism of their recent sponsorship agreement with the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Amnesty International is the last to sound with the Catalan giants. The Catalan giants will wear the A -Slogan of the DR Congo Tourism Board for the next four years.

Last month it was announced that Barcelona agreed with the government of Dr. Congo to become a shirt sponsor. The Blaugrana -Training Kit sees the words' Dr. Congo – The heart of Africa 'on the back of their shirts in French, and the same line now also appears on their shirt sleeves for competitions. It is believed that the deal will bring approximately € 44 million to the Barcelona treasure box during the period of the contract. The deal also includes a partnership with the Barca Innovation Hub and is planning to make programs in schools to improve the sport in the country.

The deal was confronted by some with increased eyebrows, given the alleged dedication of Barcelona to maintain human rights and certain values. As reported by Marca, Amnesty International has condemned the agreement and stated that 'sports cannot be a platform to launder human rights violations'.

Their statement notes that the eastern part of the country, where there is currently a conflict between government forces and Rwanda supported rebel groups, such as M23, is the scene of 'devastating human rights violations'. The government of Dr. Congo claims that these are exclusively committed by the M23 rebels, but their information is that the army has also been involved in gang of gangs, extrajudicial executions, abuse of civilian people and Oteher. '

The deal was also convicted at the time, given the continuous human rights issues. The government of Dr. Congo is also about implementing the Deady -fine for homosexuality, while Barcelona LGBTQIA+ causes openly supports causes. Earlier this month the agreement was raised in the Swedish Parliament, because Sweden sends millions of help to Dr. Congo, with 73% of the population that meets the provisions for life in poverty.
