Barcelona will welcome Pau Cubarsi in the coming hours, with the defender officially left the Spain camp on Saturday afternoon. As such, the 18-year-old will not be included in the team for the quarterfinals of the UEFA Nations League on Sunday against the second stage against the Netherlands.
In the first half of the first stage on Thursday, Cubarsi was forced after a blow to his ankle. Nevertheless, there was trust that he would be available for the return match in the Mestalla, although this hope has now been deposited, much to the delight of La Liga leaders Barcelona.
On Saturday, the Spanish football federation announced that Cubarsi had withdrawn with immediate effect from the Spain team, allowing him to return to Barcelona to undergo further medical tests on his wounded ankle.
“After the tests were performed by the medical services of the Royal Spanish football federation, it was decided that the player will return to his club, Futbol Club Barcelona, to start his recovery from the discomfort he has in his judge ankle and that prevented him from ending the match against the Netherlands in the 'De Kuip' stage in Rotterdam.”
Cubarsi is the fourth Spanish central defender who has been suffering from injury problems in recent weeks. Dani Vivian and Aymeric Laporte were forced to miss the first team, while Inigo Martinez had to withdraw after picking up a knock in Barcelona's 4-2 victory over Atletico Madrid last weekend.
At this stage, Spain did not decide to call a replacement for Cubarsi. They already have Robin Le Normand, Dean Huijsen and Raul Asencio in the Luis de la Fuente team, but with the second stage against the Netherlands at home, it is likely that someone else will be called up.
