Barcelona ‘confident to register Olmo’ but LaLiga ‘is threatened’ if agree

Barcelona are reportedly confident they can sign Dani Olmo and Pau Victor after working out a solution to their financial blockage.

Barca's bid to sign the pair for the second half of the season was rejected by LaLiga after they failed to prove they had the necessary financial security in time.

Olmo, who won the 2024 European Championship with Spain, only joined Barcelona from RB Leipzig in the summer on a £50 million contract. However, he could only be registered on a temporary basis until the end of 2024 due to LaLiga's ongoing financial constraints for Barcelona.

The Catalan giants had tried to re-register him and send Victor on so they could play after December 31, but LaLiga rejected their request.

Barca plan to continue with their attempts to sign the duo and LaLiga have reportedly been threatened with legal action by several clubs if they approve the move, according to SPORT.

Barcelona believe the sale of VIP boxes at their soon-to-be-refurbished Camp Nou will bring them additional income – around £83 million – to register the stars, SPORT reports.

Club directors are said to be 'confident' that they will be given the green light to register the stars and have been 'working around the clock' to make this happen.

Barcelona will return to action on January 4 when they take on Barbastro in the Copa del Rey, and as things stand, Olmo and Victor will be ineligible to play.

The saga is causing major ripples in the wider European transfer market as Olmo has become a target for Manchester United and Manchester City. He would have the right to leave as a free agent this month if he cannot be registered.

With three goals and two assists, he was a key star in Spain's victory at the European Championship. He has since scored six goals and registered one assist for Barca this season after leaving Leipzig.

La Liga issued a statement on Tuesday evening confirming that they had rejected Barcelona's proposal to register the players.

It said: 'FC Barcelona has not presented any alternative that would allow it, in accordance with LaLiga's economic control rules, to register players after January 2.'

LaLiga has now removed both Olmo and Victor from Barcelona's registered player list on their website.

Olmo, Barcelona's number 20, would have played alongside Marc Casado and Frankie De Jong.

Victor, who has the jersey number 18, is also no longer on the website.

However, defender Andreas Christensen has returned after the defender was removed to accommodate Olmo's temporary registration for the first half of the season.

Christensen made just one appearance this season due to injury on the opening day of the campaign, which opened the door for Olmo's registration.

Olmo, who has been linked with a possible move to the Premier League amid uncertainty over his future, gave a cryptic message as he shared photos of his New Year's Eve celebrations on social media.

The 26-year-old shared photos with the caption “It's time for 2025,” ending the message with blue and heart emojis, an apparent reference to Barcelona's blaugrana colors.

Olmo posed in photos with his influencer girlfriend Laura Abla Schmitt and friends to welcome him in 2025.

The post appeared to be prompted by comments made by Olmo's agent Andy Bara about the star's future.

Bara, who sparked rumors when he arrived in Manchester last week, told Fabrizio Romano: 'Dani's decision is to STAY at Barcelona because he wants to play for Barça.

'We are NOT considering any other option. Dani wants to play for Barcelona.'
