Less than 24 hours after their disappointing Copa del Rey signed against Atletico Madrid, Barcelona has received some much needed news in the form of a return of an injury for Andreas Christensen.
Christensen, who has been associated with a summer movement in recent months, has not played since the opening day of the 2024-25 season when he appeared as a replacement against Valencia. A few days after that match, he underwent an operation to correct a problematic Achilles tendon injury, and this ended with him out of operation for five months.
He returned to the matchday team of Barcelona in January, but did not succeed in appearing against Getafe, Benfica or Valencia. Then he suffered an injury that has seen him over the past four weeks, although he has now been restored.
On Wednesday, Barcelona confirmed that Christensen received the medical green light from club officials, according to MD. As such, it will now be available for the confrontation of this weekend La Liga collision against Real Sociedad in the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Company.
The return of Christensen means that Barcelona now has only two injured players, who are Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who is approaching a return, and Marc Bernal, who will not play his season again after a torn front cruciate ligament during a match against Rayo Vallecano back In August. It also means that Hansi Flick is back to his full quota from central defenders, with Pau Cubarsi, Inigo Martinez, Ronald Arajo and Eric Garcia also available to the German head coach.
Christensen has been a very impressive artist during his time in Barcelona, and it will be interesting to see how he is used by Flick during the last months of the season. He can be used in midfield if necessary, as was the case with Xavi Hernandez during the 2023-24 campaign.
