Barcelona hoping for €24m financial boost from Liverpool

Barcelona have attempted to cash in on a number of young talents in recent summers, with the likes of Ez Abde, Chadi Riad, Mikayil Faye and Julian Araujo all leaving this summer. Two years ago, Nico Gonzalez left the club, but that could bring in a lot more money than initially thought.

Unable to find a place in the team under Xavi Hernandez, Nico left for Porto, where he was worth €8.5 million at the time. However, the Blaugrana retained a €30 million buyback option and a 40% sell-on clause.

It seems highly unlikely that they will execute that buyback option, but Liverpool could activate their release clause with Porto. That amounts to sixty million euros, and according to the Anfield Watch, Liverpool has been impressed with his performances this season, with ten goals in 24 games from midfield.

Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi was Liverpool's top target last summer and they remain interested in him. He also has a release clause of €60 million.

It appears that, depending on whether Zubimendi accepts a departure, Liverpool are evaluating other alternatives to strengthen the center of the pitch. Nico, 24, struggled to find positional consistency at Barcelona and was eventually surpassed by the likes of Gavi and then Fermin Lopez in the pecking order.
