Barcelona have five days to sign Dani Olmo and Pau Victor, otherwise they will be without them for the rest of the season. Their financial situation has all but ruled out further action during the January transfer window.
Much to the chagrin of manager Hansi Flick. A few weeks ago, Flick announced to the club that he would like to hire a defensive midfielder during the winter transfer period, Sport reports. He was looking for someone who had legs and was physically strong, who could add muscle and compete for the ball, something he would have appreciated especially in the last half hour of games.
He was charmed by someone with the characteristics of Ngolo Kante, with whom Barcelona and Atletico Madrid were linked this summer, although Al-Ittihad did not want to do business. However, Flick has been told that there is simply no room in the salary cap for an addition.
Another name he was fond of was Bayern Munich's Leon Goretzka. Flick managed Goretzka while he was there, and while the former Schalke midfielder doesn't have the defensive profile described above, he does have the physical profile he was looking for. Goretzka was a real loan option in November, when Barcelona thought they could spend it thanks to the Nike deal. He did not get any minutes at the time, but after Joao Palhinha got injured, he is back in the starting line-up.
