Barcelona request extension for stadium rental as Camp Nou to face further delays

Barcelona were due to be back at Camp Nou in November 2024, but with little sign of an imminent return the club is making contingency plans.

According to MD, Barcelona has requested permission from the Barcelona City Council to extend their lease for the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys in Montjuic for another month until the end of April. Barcelona believe they could be back home at Camp Nou in May for the final part of the season, with a possible Clasico on the 10th or 11th of the month.

The club does have the green light from the fire brigade for their fire safety plans and the grass is laid a month and a half before the stadium is ready for action. Rumor has it that a series of concerts will be unveiled in Montjuic in the coming weeks that will require a three-week lead time to install their sets, which would pose an obstacle for Barcelona to play there. One piece of good news, however, is that UEFA are unlikely to stand in their way when Barcelona return to Camp Nou for the Champions League semi-finals, should they make it.

That contradicts previous reports claiming that UEFA rules mean a club must choose one stadium for the knockout stages of the competition. If that is the case, Barcelona would have to make their choice by March at the latest if they qualify directly for the Round of 16, but they could be in trouble if they are forced to stick to one ground because of those concerts. . It has been suggested that they could face Espanyol, Valencia or Atletico Madrid in the knockout stages.
