Barcelona salary limit situation: €72m worse than last summer as Joan Laporta break promise

Barcelona continues to face major financial problems this season as they enter the final hours of the year trying to register Dani Olmo and Pau Victor to La Liga, knowing that they will not be able to play the second half of the season if La Liga Liga does not approve . That's no surprise given their salary cap situation.

President Joan Laporta had promised that Barcelona would get back within their salary cap this year, both in the summer and again in the autumn with the signing of their new Nike sponsorship deal. However, that has not been the case. During one of their attempts to keep Olmo and Victor registered, the judge revealed in their legal proceedings that Barcelona's current wage bill is €153 million above their salary cap, as revealed by Cadena SER.

That is to say, Barcelona are now €72 million worse off in terms of the salary cap gap than after last summer's transfer window, when the figure was €81 million – almost half of what it is now. Barcelona spent €57.4 million on signing Victor and Olmo, and while new contracts have been handed out, it is worrying for them that things have not improved much after the much-hyped Nike deal.

It was previously reported that Barcelona had received a €60 million discount on signing Olmo and Victor, and that they were trying to strike a deal to sell commercial rights to their VIP boxes for €100 million. The deal would last 20 years and affect the VIP seats at Camp Nou, and Barcelona are currently waiting for the green light from La Liga for the deal.
