Barcelona scrapped Alexander-Arnold move for two reasons after private talks

Trent Alexander-Arnold seems to be on his way to Real Madrid, but Barcelona was interested in the Liverpool defender earlier this season and was in conversation with his representatives

A few months ago, Barcelona held conversations with the representatives of Trent Alexander-Arnold, but scraped plans for a move for two reasons. Alexander-Arnold, 26, ends his contract in Liverpool and seems to be up to leave his boy's club on a free transfer this summer.

It appeared on Tuesday that Barcelona's arch rivals, Real Madrid, have agreed personal conditions with the right back, which is said to sign a lucrative five -year -old deal at the Bernabeu worth more than £ 220,000 a week. Spanish giants Real have always been the front runners to sign him and spent a speculative offer of £ 20 million during the January transfer window that rejected Liverpool flat.

The Power Bokers of Real did not follow their offer and the free transfer route has been taken, so that Alexander-Arnold is convinced to sign a pre-contract agreement to secure his signature. However, Barcelona could have been in battle, if not for a few factors. Spanish radio station Cadena SER report that Barca has considered several times to sign Alexander-Arnold.

The first instance was during the time of Xavi Hernandez and Jordi Cruyff in the Nou -Kamp. Then, earlier this season, Barcelona housed their interest and had conversations with the representatives of the 26-year-old. Deco, who replaced Cruyff as sports director of the club, organized a meeting to gauge the chance of a deal.

In the end, Barcelona's chiefs were of the opinion that a movement for Alexander-Arnold would be a non-starter because of the well-documented financial problems of the club. In addition, the performance of Jules Kounde – a central defender of the trade that excelled on right back under Hansi Flick – weakened the determination of Barca.

The wage requirements and registration bonus of Alexander-Arnold would have made it a precious deal for the LaLala title hunters, who go for the Treble in the last two months of the season. A new right back is still on the Deco wish list prior to the summer transfer window, with cheaper alternatives such as Rayo Vallecano star Andrei Ratiu and Monaco's Vanderson both.

Would Barcelona fit better with Trent Alexander-Arnold? Say in the commentary part.

It had been exciting to see Alexander-Arnold as part of the side of Flick, where the full-backs are encouraged to forward and combine with Barcelona's formidable attacking Trident of Lamine Yamal, Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha. Barca is fighting Real and Atletico Madrid for the LaLala title and is currently at the top of the table with three points after winning their match at home to Osasuna on Thursday 3-0.

As far as Liverpool is concerned, they will welcome Everton to Anfield in a Merseyside derby collision next Wednesday and Alexander-Arnold could have an icy reception after this week's news. Liverpool has not commented on the reports, but real boss Carlo Ancelotti will be confronted against the media on Friday and will not be asked to Alexander-Arnold.
