Barcelona secure Ronald Araujo stay using three promises

It has been widely reported that Ronald Araujo will not leave Barcelona this month, but will instead sign a new contract. The Uruguayan defender was keen to leave as soon as possible, but after consultation with sporting director Deco on Tuesday, he is now convinced to stay in Catalonia.

Relevo opened discussions between Deco and Araujo and according to the report, the former made three promises that led to a positive resolution. The first concerned Barcelona's chances of success this season, and the thought of multiple trophies (on top of the Spanish Super Cup already won) played a role.

Secondly, Deco promised Araujo that he would receive a significant pay rise in his new contract, and that his release clause – currently worth €1 billion – will be reduced to an amount that makes it more possible for clubs to activate.

Retaining Araujo's services is excellent news for Barcelona, although it appears to come at a significant cost. Nevertheless, the club's return to La Liga's 1:1 rule does mean they can take more risks financially.
