Perhaps no player has been more hotly debated in the past year than Robert Lewandowski, with the Polish forward experiencing some significant peaks and valleys in form. At the age of 36, many wonder whether he can still make it at the highest level.
According to Sport, Barcelona will discuss his future in February after the January transfer window has ended. If he plays at least 45 minutes in half of the games this season, his contract will be extended for a fourth year. The Blaugrana expect him to reach that figure in February and will discuss his future for him.
They go on to say that there is a section of the Barcelona board that believes it is time to say goodbye to him next summer. However, sporting director Deco and manager Hansi Flick believe that his performances have been at top level and are counting on him next summer. However, if his recent dip continues it would open up the debate, and crucially they believe he would be willing to step aside if the club were honest and direct with him. As things stand, however, his intention is to stay.
Lewandowski is the runaway Pichichi leader at the moment, with 16 goals in his 17.5 ahead of his biggest challenges. That form has declined in recent weeks, and Flick himself also seems to be concerned about his fitness. Lewandowski was subbed off in every match in December except the first against RCD Mallorca, in which he did not play at all for the first time all season.
