Joey Barton is accused of ‘racism’ by fans after making bizarre claim about Man United legend Patrice Evra
Fans have accused Joey Barton of 'racism' after a controversial social media post.
While visiting X on Wednesday morning, Barton responded to a video of “an old German woman” and her “new young boyfriend” sitting on a beach in Africa.
Bizarrely, Barton wrote: 'Patrice Evra will do everything he can to stay relevant.' It remains unclear why the former midfielder targeted the Man United legend.
The video of the woman and the man showed their discussion about him as they waited for documents that would allow them to live together in Germany.
It didn't take long for fans to quickly respond to the bizarre comparison with one person writing, “The irony of this ridiculous and racist post from a man who has seemingly tried to say as many controversial things as possible to stay relevant is outrageous.”
In a sarcastic version, another wrote: 'Hahaha good Joey! Because every black man with glasses looks like Patrice Evra to you! That's right nonsense! Really funny'.
“Racism cannot stay in for long,” said another. 'One of the strangest messages ever. Sounded better in your head,” said one user. “Racist p****,” one user wrote.
“There's nothing racist about that comment,” said another sarcastically.
The bizarre comparison to Evra is the latest controversial comment, after he previously spoke out against former England star and pundit Eni Aluko.
In July, Barton was accused of alleged 'malicious communications' towards Aluko – and in response he branded the justice system a 'banana republic'.
In January, the former Premier League footballer compared Aluko and fellow pundit Lucy Ward to serial killers Fred and Rose West.
Responding to the allegations, Barton wrote on
'These are crazy times we live in. Don't the police have enough in their hands yet?
'The British system is becoming a banana republic. Lawfare is being used against its own citizens for having a dissenting voice.”
In February, Aluko accused Barton of subjecting her to one of the worst cases of social media abuse I have ever experienced, following a stream of vile messages.
After covering Crystal Palace's FA Cup draw against Everton with Ward in January, Barton had written: 'How does she even talk about men's football?
'She can't even kick a ball properly. Your coverage of the EFC game last night took it to a new low. Eni Aluko and Lucy Ward, the Fred and Rose West of football commentary.'
The Wests murdered twelve women and young girls in twenty years. Fred took his own life before trial, while Rose was sentenced to ten life sentences. She is still in prison, at the age of 70.
Barton then fanned the flames even further by making his criticism even more extreme, writing that Aluko “clearly fell into the Joseph Stalin category” because he had “murdered the ears of hundreds of thousands of fans.”
Meanwhile, Barton also caused controversy in the summer when he backed Mason Greenwood's move to Marseille, despite many fans reacting furiously to his arrival.
Furious Marseille fans launched a #GreenwoodNotWelcome campaign after the first left but Barton, who played for Ligue 1 in 2012-13, is convinced he 'deserves a chance'.
'That's a great signing. This kid deserves a chance to move on with his career,” Barton wrote on X.
'We all make mistakes. Nobody is perfect. England would have won the European Championship with this boy in the team.
'He is as good a player as anyone in the Euros squad. His behavior and the public fallout greatly affected his performance, yet he went to an average team in Spain and got himself back on track!'
