Barcelona’s last shot at Dani Olmo registration: The legal challenge to follow

Barcelona appear to be on their last legs when it comes to keeping Dani Olmo and Pau Victor available for the rest of the season. After missing the deadline to keep them registered for the rest of the season, Barcelona sent La Liga all the necessary documents for the sale of their VIP seats, a deal reportedly worth €110 million that would allow them doing.

But now that the deadline has been missed, the latest news is that La Liga will not allow Barcelona to keep Olmo and Victor registered, with rules stating that players cannot be registered twice. The result is that Barcelona's only option to retain them contractually is to challenge their decision in court.

There are several options available to them legally, as explained by MD. They could claim force majeure, which refers to unforeseen circumstances that prevent them from getting the documents together for La Liga, although legal experts have noted that they are unlikely to qualify for that ruling.

However, the Catalan daily says their most likely argument is that the registration period should be extended to February 2 instead of December 31, including the January transfer window. Their assumption would be that if the transfer window is not open, Barcelona will be unable to make transfers and therefore increase their salary cap, putting them at a disadvantage and affecting Olmo and Victor's employment rights.

Without any legal opinion behind the following, it seems like a rather weak claim, as Barcelona themselves attempted to increase their salary cap with the sale of their VIP boxes, a route that allowed them to increase their salary cap without using the transfer market. However, the Blaugrana just need to convince the judge that there is enough challenge to suspend the deregistration of Olmo and Victor while they argue their case.
