Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 Augsburg: Alonso’s side delay Bayern’s title celebrations

Bayer Leverkusen defeated Augsburg 2-0 in the Bundesliga on Saturday to postpone the expected title profit of the leaders of Bayern Munich with at least a week.

The still reigning Bundesliga champions remain eight points behind leaders Bayern with three more games to play. However, Vincent Kompany's side can seal their 34th competition crown with a victory at RB Leipzig next week.

Patrik Schick gave Leverkusen a perfect start, fell in the 13th minute with their first real chance, drilling from the edge of the box for his 19th league goal of the season.

Nathan Tella thought he had doubled their lead just over 10 minutes later, on his way to the cross of Alex Grimaldo at De Verre Post, but it was excluded from offside.

Leverkusen remained at the top of the first half, with Emiliano Buendia a powerful curl from outside the box unleashed that Finna Dahmen did not give a chance.

Samuel Essende and Alexis Claude-Maurice had both chances to withdraw one for Augsburg, but the first shot just wide before the Frenchman Matej Kovar forced into a nice stop.

Jonas Hofmann also had the chance to undoubtedly make the result with 10 minutes left, but he should have done better if he just sent the ball wide.

Home Win!

Data Debrief: Leverkusen Ruin Bayern's Party

Xabi Alonso insisted that Leverkusen will not give up their Bundesliga crown without a fight, and they push the title race as close as possible to the end of the campaign.

The work itself had not scored in three of their last four home games before Saturday, but two great finishes made them avoid a similar fate.

However, it was a disappointing day for Augsburg. They were on an undefeated line of eight games away from home in the Bundesliga in 2025, but they struggled to make something.

They had 11 attempts worth 0.72 expected goals (XG), although they only got two on goal. In the meantime, Leverkusen got five of their 14 shots on goal, which improved their 0.81 XG with some margin better.
