Bayer Leverkusen Sporting Director declares Xabi Alonso decision on future

The shadow of Xabi Alonso has become a bit shorter in recent hours. Previously, the presence of the Bayer Leverkusen manager could be felt almost as far to the south as the Spanish capital, with heavy speculation that connects him with former Club Real Madrid, but it seems that he did not expect the move this summer.

Carlo Ancelotti and Alonso have both contracts until 2026, but it seems like an unwritten rule that results in a season without trophy in the Santiago Bernabeu. Los Blancos lives this season in all three most important competitions and the club has a World Cup at the end of the season, but if Ancelotti cannot win any of them, his continuity will be questioned.

If he leaves Los Blancos, then Alonso is the preferred option and the only one who is spoken in Madrid. It was reported that Alonso would announce a decision about his future on Thursday prior to the collision of Leverkusen with VFL Bochum, but he limited himself to say that there was “nothing to decide.”

Bayer Leverkusen -sports director Simon Rolfes, however, seems to have arranged the case. After a 3-1 victory over Bochum, Rolfes said that Alonso would be in Bayarena next season.

“No, he stays, that's it. He told me there was nothing. He has a contract with us,” he explained to the German media, as quoted by Diario ALS.

In theory, that would put an end to speculation, but until there is clarity about the future of Ancelotti, Alonso will probably remain a subject in the Spanish media. Alonso has so far been careful with dealing with his career and the tendency only has to make a decision if he thinks it is good – if he has closed the door completely to a movement this summer, it might forced Real Madrid's hand a little when it comes to retaining Ancelotti.
