Bayern call for national teams to prioritise player welfare after Davies injury

Bayern Munich has called on national associations to put more emphasis on the well -being of players, where the club has received a fee about an injury to Alphonso Davies.

In March, Davies tore his cruciate ligament while he represented Canada in a Concacaf Nations League third place play-off match against the United States.

As a result, Davies missed the rest of the Bundesliga season, as well as Bayern's Champions League quarterfinals against Inter, while he will also be the Club World Cup and Canada's Gold Cup campaign.

In the aftermath of the injury, Bayern's sports director Christoph Freund described Davies' treatment by Canada as “sloppy”, and they have now repeated their displeasure in a meeting with the Canadian Soccer Association.

In a statement, Bayern Chief Executive Jan-Christian Dreesen said: “The behavior and actions of the Canadian association have not fully fulfilled the duty to protect Davies.

“Like all other national associations, Canada Soccer is obliged to give priority to the health of his players.

“FC Bayern will be financially compensated by FIFA for the injury to Davies as part of the FIFA Club Protection program. The amount of this compensation has yet to be determined.”
