Bayern can have ‘no excuses’ after Bochum collapse, Kompany insists

Vincent Kompany is insisting that Bayern Munich cannot have an excuses “after wasting a lead of two goals during their defeat by Bochum.

The Bundesliga leaders were hit in the competition for the first time this season, because their relegation-threatened opponents recovered from 2-0 to get an unlikely 3-2 victory in the Allianz Arena.

All seemed to be planning for Bayern, who took over control through the brace from Raphael Guerreiro, although Jakov Medic halved the shortage for the visitors.

The side of Kompany, however, was forced to play the entire second half with 10 men after Joao Palhinha received a straight red card.

Bochum then used on their numerical advantage when Ibrahima Sissoko laid a level before Matus Bero completed the turning point in the 71st minute.

“No apologies. We have lost and we can analyze as much as we want, but we have to take responsibility for everything,” Kompany told reporters during his press conference after the game.

“Even with 10 men, our ambition must be to win the game, or at least not to lose. We have not achieved that. Bochum deserves the feeling of having won, I know what energy it takes.

“We have always responded very well so far [to defeats]. At these moments you have to accept that the criticism will be there, but we will concentrate on the reaction.

“We have lost, and it is now only about the next game. That is the only important thing. That was a moment, but we have other moments that are discussed, and that is what is important to me.”

Despite the defeat, Bayern remains eight points clearly on the Bundesliga summit, after Bayer Leverkusen was beaten 2-0 in second place by Werder Bremen.

Thomas Muller, who started for the much changed side of Kompany, says that his teammates should not eliminate, with the second stage of their Champions League Last-16 draw with Leverkusen on Tuesday.

“We really delivered a good performance in the beginning, but then we made mistakes,” said the veteran Vooruit. “We missed a penalty, saw a red card and brought goals.

“Playing with 10 men does not necessarily lead to goals. There was plenty to analyze for everyone, but we are still going further. Maybe that is easier because nothing has changed in the table. We will fully concentrate on Tuesday from tomorrow.”
