Bayern Munich demanded a statement from Canada team officers on Friday after Alphonso Davies had had a ligament crack that will see him miss the rest of the season.
Early in Canada's 2-1 win over the United States, Davies was forced in the play-off of the Concacaf Nations League in third place on Sunday.
The left back has sustained a front cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee, which rules him from the crucial season finale of Bayern.
This season Davies has been an integral part of Vincent Kompany and made 31 performances in all competitions, some goals and three assists.
“It is bitter for us and the way it happened is simply incorrect,” Bayern sports director Christoph Freund told a press conference. “We want to know what exactly happened.”
Freund said that Davies had complained about fatigue after the earlier game of Canada, but still played.
“He is the captain, a young man who wanted to help his team, but it was borderline,” he added.
“The second problem is the injury after 12 minutes. Then Phonzy flies back on a 12 -hour flight and we all assume that it is not serious injury, but then we have this.
“That is sloppy. It is not professional, and we have to talk and clean up. We are the employers, we pay the players, so we will look at what happened.”
Davies was one of the two players, together with Dayot Upamecano, who returned from international service wounds. Upamecano is put offside for a few weeks with a knee injury.
Bayern is currently at the top of the Bundesliga, six points free of the second Bayer Leverkusen placed, and has a quarterfinals of the Champions League against Inter to come next month, a draw that will miss Upamecano.
The side of Kompany went two games without a victory in the Bundesliga and followed a shock destruction for Bochum with a 1-1 draw with Union Berlin for the international break.
Bayern has dropped five points in the last two competition days, just as much as they let their previous 12 games slide together.
However, they have often done well against St. Pauli and have won eight of their last nine competitive games against them.
Kompany says that his team has sufficient quality to fill the void and no apologies will be made.
“It's a shame, in the first place, for Fonzy and Upamecano, who can't be with us in this crucial period of the season,” he said.
“This season we had to compensate for other absences. Hopefully it brings the group together tighter.
“The reaction is what is important. There are no apologies for me. Just to win the next game and to keep improving.”
