Bayern Munich 3-0 Mainz: Leaders on the cusp of Bundesliga title

Bayern Munich illuminated a 3-0 win over Mainz on Saturday, but had to put their title celebrations on ice after Bayer Leverkusen corresponded to their victory.

Bayern could have achieved the Bundesliga Crown if Leverkusen had dropped points, but they can now protect their 34th league title with a victory at RB Leipzig next week.

Jonathan Burkardt missed a glorious opportunity to open the score for the visitors after five minutes, but after he had shaken Kim Min-Jae in the box, he flared over the bar.

Josip Stanisic also shot widely shortly thereafter, but Bayern eventually found the breakthrough in the 27th minute, with Konrad Laimer that Leroy Sane saved to shoot in the far corner.

With five minutes to play in the first half, Michael Olise doubled their lead with a stunning solo effort and shot in the back of the net from a tight angle with an excellent finish.

Sane then hit the woodwork twice in the second half. When one-on-one with the goalkeeper, his muted effort hit the post just after the hour before he repeated that performance with half a volley less than 20 minutes later.

Eric Dier eventually went home their third goal in the 84th minute and rises on the distant pole to go home from Olise's corner, shortly after Thomas Muller entered the field to make his 500th Bundesliga -appearance.

Top scorer Harry Kane will miss next week's match at Leipzig after picking up his fifth booking and a suspension.

Debrief data: Bayern celebrates Muller's Landmark

Muller came up in the 83rd minute to make his 500th league match for the club.

He is only the fourth player who reaches that sign in the Bundesliga, with only one club, after Karl-Heinz Korbel (602 games for Eintracht Frankfurt), Manfred Kaltz (581 for Hamburger SV) and Michael Lameck (518 for Bochum).

While Leverkusen made sure that he would not celebrate that monument with a title, Bayern set up a show in the Allianz Arena.

Olise has now provided 12 assists in the Bundesliga this season, a competition height. Since the detailed data collection started in 2004-05, only one new Bayern reconciliation has once set up so many goals in a top flight campaign: James Rodriguez in 2017-18 (also 11 assists).

Bayern also expanded their winning series about Mainz at home to eight games – their longest current such series in the competition.
