Bayern Munich hit with injury blow as star suffers a setback ahead of Champions League quarter-final and title run-in

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has sustained a setback in his recovery of a calf injury.

The veteran rose the injury for the first time and celebrated the goal of Jamal Musiala during Bayern's 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the first stage of their Champions League Last-16-equal game earlier this month.

He then missed the second-LEG draw and the next two Bundesliga matches against Bochum and Union Berlin.

Neuer has worked on his comeback for the past two weeks, but will have to wait longer for his return to the field.

Bayern has confirmed that the 38-year-old in his calf has sustained a 'reaction' and will stay on the sidelines for longer.

Vincent Kompany's side is clearly at the top of the Bundesliga table and will be confronted against St Pauli and Augsburg after the international break.

Bayern will then organize Inter Milan in the first stage of the Champions League quart final and they will be hopeful that Neuer will be fit for the crunch collision.

After Neuer had sustained the injury for the first time, Kompany said: 'At the moment I have no news about Manuel. But it is true that when he celebrated the goal, he injured himself. It looks like his calf, but we will have to see now. '

He added: 'I don't want to put too much pressure on Jonas [Urbig] Or Manu. We had times this season without Harry Kane, Musiala and Joshua Kimmich and we also played without Manuel, so we will just have to do it again without him.

'We have talent in our team to continue. This was Jonas' debut and you could of course have competitions more easily, but in the first months with us he seems really calm and controlled in his actions. '

Neuer was replaced by Jonas Urbig, who also sustained a foot injury while he had international duty with the Germany under 21.

Neuer recently signed a one -year contract extension with Bayern Munich who will keep him in the club until the summer of 2026 and brought him to his forty.
