Bayern Munich keeping title talk to a minimum ahead of Mainz game

Bayern Munich is not missing a spirit of a potential Bundesliga title win in Saturday's home game against Mainz, says Vincent Kompany.

The Bundesliga leaders are eight points clearly at the top with four games left.

A victory on Mainz on Saturday would be enough to secure the title if Bayer Leverkusen does not beat Augsburg.

However, Kompany is not distracted by thoughts about glory.

“I only prepare for the Mainz game. Only the game is important, that 90 minutes,” Kompany told reporters.

“All those scenarios are not in my head yet.

“We lost against Mainz [earlier in the season]. The way I know that my team is that the motivation is so great for tomorrow.

“We know the qualities of Mainz, but our motivation is so high that we will look at our own qualities.”

That earlier loss at Mainz is only one of the two defeats that Bayern has suffered in the competition throughout the season, of 30 of such competitions.

That is something they last managed in 2016-17 under Carlo Ancelotti. They have now linked their scoring of the entire previous season (72).

Bayern Head of Sport Max Eberl repeated the coach's view and said it was too early to celebrate.

“Bayern can earn their 34th German league title,” said Eberl. “It would be my first. But I don't want to hear anything [about celebration planning].

“If we reach it, we will start, but I don't want to hear anything about it now.”

Thomas Muller, who leaves the club at the end of the season after 25 years, could make his 500th league match for the side, although he did not train on Thursday due to illness.

“Thomas was a bit sick. But I hope he will be back in training today and will be there tomorrow,” said Kompany.

Muller could become the fourth player who reaches this milestone for a single club after Charly Korbel (602 games for Eintracht Frankfurt), Manfred Kaltz (581 for Hamburg) and Michael Lameck (518 for VfL Bochum).
