A Bayern Munich star is excluded out of action for six months after he has torn his ACL, the club confirmed.
The German giants, who are top of the Bundesliga with six points – for Bayer Leverkusen, the German champions – have set their sights on both domestic and European success this season.
They have lost their closest rivals in the last 16 of the German cup, they have set their sights in regaining the competition title, and winning the Champions League, of which they are in the quarterfinal.
However, they will have to do that without one of their star players, after Alphonso Davies was out of operation for about six months after tearing his ACL in international duty.
The Canadian entire back was recorded at the start of the 2-1 victory on his side in California on Sunday, after he had started again for his country – his 58th limit for his country.
Follow-up scans have confirmed that the outcome is the worst possible for Davies and Bayern, with the defender now for the rest of the following season and apparently the start of the next.
Bayern said in a statement on Wednesday: 'Davies was diagnosed with a torn cruciate ligament in his right knee after his return of international duty to the Canadian national team and will undergo surgery today.
“The 24-year-old will not be available for a few months to play for the German plating champions.”
Bayern also confirmed that Center Back Dayot Upamecano will also be out of operation for the foreseeable, adding to it: “Upamecano was diagnosed with loose bodies in his left knee, which means that he will not be available for FC Bayern for a few weeks.”
Max Eberl, Sporting Director of Bayern, said: 'Unfortunately, there is always the risk that players return from international breaks with injuries – this time we have hit particularly hard.
'The absence of Alphonso Davies and Dayot Upamecano weighs heavily on FC Bayern. Fonzy gets all the support he needs on his way to recovery. We will also keep a close eye on UPA in the coming weeks and expect it to be available again soon.
'We have a strong team and will compensate for this absence. We will now grow even closer together. The quality is to keep pursuing our big goals. '
Davis played 31 times this season for Bayern and scored three goals.
