Bayern record counts for nothing in the Champions League, says Alonso

Xabi Alonso said that his impressive record against Bayern Munich counts for nothing for the All-Bundesliga collision of Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League.

Under Alonso, Leverkusen are unbeaten in their six games against Bayern in all matches, which won three and draw the other games.

They also held a clean slate in three of their last four against them, after they have not kept there in their previous 15 games in advance, with 42 goals in those games.

But despite Alonso's series of results against Bayern, it is the side of Vincent Kompany who has an eight-point advantage compared to the Bundesliga champions in the top.

The two teams met each other three times this season, whereby Leverkusen registered the only victory in their DFB-Pokal collision in December.

“There is no secret,” Alonso told reporters. “The last match against Bayern means nothing for us for tomorrow, they don't bring us anything.

“Tomorrow is the next game. It is always the most important thing. We prepare for.

“Of course we know that it is the Champions League, it is a bit different from the Bundesliga. The first game is in Munich and we expect a hard, intense game.”

This will be the very first meeting between Bayern and Leverkusen in a major European competition, with Alonso hopeful on a better result than the last to work against German opposition outside the Bundesliga.

Leverkusen was last confronted with a German side in the UEFA Cup 2007-08, when they were beaten 3-2 by Hamburg.

And despite his excellent record, Alonso knows that his team is being confronted with a club that has won six European cups, and Bayern is now looking on course to win the Bundesliga title.

“It is clearly the situation, we know, and we have a lot of respect for FC Bayern, for history and now also at the moment,” said Alonso.

“They played a very good season and we are in a good time.

“We are ready to have a very, very heavy fight tomorrow, and again next week, and we come here to be competitive, to bring a good game.”
