Bayern star confesses Barcelona love – ‘My reference point, my favourite team’

Barcelona and Real Madrid often rely on their prestige and reputation to give them an edge in the transfer market, and on many occasions this has proven to be a bigger draw than extra money. A solid demonstration of the high regard in which footballers hold them is Jamal Musiala.

The Bayern Munich star, who is currently in contract talks with the Bavarian giants, has been linked with Real Madrid in the past. However, he has revealed that he was a Barcelona fan growing up.

“FC Barcelona was my point of reference, my favorite team. I had a Messi shirt. The midfield with Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets fascinated me. I could watch their matches over and over again. When I was a kid, Messi almost always appeared on the back of my shirts,” he told BILD, quoted by MD.

“I also had one with Neymar, but Messi was my hero, my favorite player.”

The 21-year-old clearly has a strong affection for Spanish football, despite spending his childhood between Germany and England. After spending time at the academies of Southampton and Chelsea, and appearing for the English youth categories, Musiala opted to play for Die Mannschaft after returning to Germany to join Bayern Munich. Unfortunately for Barcelona, it will be a long time before they can move for Musiala if he signs a new contract as expected.
