Benfica -defender Alvaro Carreras insists that he 'overlooks' ties with a return to Manchester United', despite their return clause.
Carreras, 21, was sold by United last summer for only € 6 million (£ 5 million) after he had not succeeded in making a senior performance for the Red Devils. His performances in Portugal have attracted interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona, of whom the last Benfica plays on Wednesday.
But United could steal a march about the European giants by exercising their return clause of € 20 million (£ 16 million) that ends in the summer of 2026. Carreras, however, does not sound too interested in an immediate return to Old Trafford and wants to concentrate on making his name at Benfica, who scored three goals and have registered four assists this season.
Asked about United's potential interest, the Spaniard revealed to a bola through a sport witness: “The truth is that I overlook it a bit. I concentrate on what I have to do because I have a game every three days.
“There is always interest from teams, and everyone wants to grow, but I am doing very well here (at Benfica). Manchester United has an option to buy that is signed, but I am very happy here.”
Carreras, who was signed by United from Real Madrid in 2020, was also asked about his future in January, which again indicated that he did not want to leave Lisbon. “You never know, but I have a contract for many years here at Benfica, I'm happy,” he said. “They gave me the chance to grow, and I owe everything to them.”
United brought a new left back in January and welcomed Patrick Dorgu in a deal with a value of a maximum of £ 29 million. But given the fitness battle of Luke Shaw, Ruben Amorim could be on the market for another signature.
Amorim's 3-4-3 system places enormous demands on its wingbacks and the Red Devils boss has not been able to find the right profiles in his current team. Defenders Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui have shared most of the minutes on both flanks, while Forwards Amad and Antony have also tried there.
United is also tipped to sign Sporting Sporting Lisbon right back Geovany Quenda, which is only 17. Portuguese prospect Quenda impressed by Amorim before the relocation of the manager to Old Trafford.
Carreras gets another chance to impress when Benfica Barcelona hosts for the first stage of their Champions League Round-of-16 collision. The 21-year-old produced an excellent cross for the opening goal from his side before giving a penalty when the teams last met during the competition phase of the competition, while Barcelona won a 5-4 victory during the stopping time.
