Match report
With the Estadio Benito Villamarín who underwent renovation, Real Betis started their two-year residence in La Cartuja against an Alavés side full of confidence after a dramatic 2-1 win over Levante on match day one. After they had a late winner last weekend, the visitors threatened to get an early opener when Jon Guridi Pau López pulled in a desperate rescue in the first two minutes. Los Verdiblancos eventually recovered from their nervy Start to hit the front by Giovani Lo Celso, who stopped the ball home after he kindly broke him in the six-year box of Cucho Hernández's blocked header.
Alavés could not produce a reaction before the break, and they fell almost two behind when Héctor Bellerín tried to catch Antonio Sivera with an near-post shot on the hour sign, only to see that the goalkeeper is smartly coming to the left. The game then started to open when Alavés increased their search for an equalizer, forced with López to make a diving stop from Abde Rebbach's free kick, before Betis' Pablo García saw his driven effort around the post.
The home faithful had to sit down through a nervy finish because their side could not kill the game with kissing a second goal. Crucial for Betis, however, they have thwarted the late attacks of the visitors to achieve their first La Liga -clean sheet since February and to bring their count to four points of two games, so that they will send them to the top for the time being. The side of Manuel Pellegrini will now prepare for an away game against Celta Vigo, while El Gorioso is confronted with the difficult test of a home meeting with Gianto Atlético Madrid.
