Birmingham City 0-2 Peterborough Utd: Darren Ferguson’s side retain Vertu Trophy

This would be the coronation of Birmingham City as the largest side ever of the third layer.

Days after securing promotion back to the championship with six to save, minority owner Tom Brady present and more than 40,000 blues fans who had made the trip to Wembley, they had the opportunity to double a competition and cup and one of the biggest seasons in the history of the club.

But Peterborough -and Darren Ferguson -just have a way because they took a shock to become the first side to win the EFL trophy in Back -To -Back years.

The Posh were brilliant, because despite a difficult League One campaign she has 16th, they set Birmingham and scored two great goals via Harley Mills and Hector Kyprianou.

Ferguson has now lifted this trophy three times as Peterborough manager, but this was the most special of the party.

“Yes, it was 100 percent,” he said after the game. 'Given the opposition, it must be the best. You could claim that they are one of the best League One teams ever. They are a good team to watch, but today was our day. '

The two parties met on Tuesday when Birmingham won 2-1 to reach promotion, but this was different.

Both parties not only mentioned much changed XIS, but Brady and Blues chairman Tom Wagner picked up fans before they start and more than 70,000 flowed to this glorious celebration of the EFL.

Peterborough started well and the Electric Kwame Poku was felled after a Mazy run.

Academy Graduate Mills, who only played his 12th game for the club, got up and curled in a wonderful free kick.

Mills was again involved with the second when his cross broke with Kyprianou and the Peterborough skipper with the class to send his side to Dreamland.

It was appropriate that Mills, who was on loan in the Sixth Tier Enfield Town earlier this season, was the show, since it was Harrison Burrows, another graduated Academy and left behind, who was the hero in last year against Wycombe.

“He has a wand from a left foot and it was a fantastic attack,” Ferguson added. “And he was excellent.”

The side of Chris Davies came out to shoot in the second half and Jay Stansfield had a goal for offside, while Jed Steer made an incredible stop, but Peterborough – whose defense is the second most seemed in League One – remained firm.

In reality, this was one of Birmingham's worst versions of the season and Wagner and Brady were seen who gave the players a PEP after the game, but Ferguson cannot give it up if he added another trophy to the family cabinet.

“It wasn't to be our day,” Davies thought. 'We consistently came to the last third part, but we missed that bit of quality and did not arrive what was needed to win the game.

'Suffering is part of life and football and you have to take your medicine. We have to learn the lessons and grow from today. '
