Birmingham City was crowned champions from League One after Wrexham had not won on Saturday in Wigan.
The blues are not in competition this weekend, while they are preparing for Peterborough in the Vertu Trophy -Final in Wembley on Sunday, live on Sky Sports, but Wrexham's aimless draw in the DW stage means that they cannot be caught at the top with six games to play.
The blues suffered relegation on the last day of the championship last season and returned to League One for the first time in 29 years.
But they made promotion in midweek after winning 2-1 in Peterborough after Tuesday evening. Goals from Alfie May and Taylor Gardner-Hickman earned an immediate return to the championship for the runaway leaders in what a rehearsal of the Vertu Trophy final of Sunday between two sides.
Davies: This team has been great
Chris Davies, head coach of Birmingham City, speaks on Tuesday evening after their victory:
“They have been great. We really put together a team completely – there were six or seven who stayed, but there were 17 new players.
“I coach them, but I am not too exaggerated, I let them gel and they come together so well.
“They can think it is good, they have a great spirit, but we have drawn good characters.
“For too long, this club had players who were not the right character – they would actually disappoint the club.
“But whether we win, lose or draw, you will always see a team that is fighting and that is what the fans ultimately want from their club and we have that from this group of players.
“They have been exceptional, because, don't forget, every game this season, at home or away, they are expected to win.
“There is no team in the country that has had to deal with it every week, we and they have treated that brilliantly.”
Birmingham on course to make League One History
It has been a cruise for promotion for Birmingham City most of the season. They have lost all the campaign of only three games and can be set to break the record for most victories and most points in the third layer.
The record for points is currently from Wolves, who built 103 in 2013/14.
As it looks now, Birmingham has 95 points after 40 games. They were still able to achieve a maximum of 113 points this season and only have to take nine points from their last six games to break the record.
Birmingham has so far also has 29 victories this season. The record in the third level is 32 wins, set by Aston Villa in 1971/72. The blues must win four of their last six games to beat that.
