Club World Cup referee Cesar Arturo Ramos sent the Jorge Figal from Boca Juniors on Monday evening – but not before he waved something else next to a red card.
Ramos supervised a Testy 2-2 draw between the Argentinian giants and Benfica, such as former Manchester United-Man Other Herrera and Andrea Belotti were also sent in the game earlier.
But things took a confusing turn when Figal got his marching orders in the 88th minute, while Ramos also brought out what seemed to be a religious symbol.
Together with his red card, Ramos stopped what fans have identified as an image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, an image of the Virgin Maria that is popular in Mexico.
Ramos, a resident of Culiacan, Mexico, quickly realized his mistake while putting the apparent religious card back in his pocket.
Yet fans could not believe what they had seen.
'You are going to be driven out and think about what you have just done, here is a card !!!,' A joke in a comment translated by X.
“La Roja de Guadalupe,” another cracked.
In the end, Nine-Men Boca Juniors held the last minutes of the game to earn a point against Benfica in Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
Boca ran to a 2-0 lead in the first half when Miguel Merentiel and Rodrigo Battaglia just found it.
Benfica, however, returned to the competition through world cup winners Angel di Maria and Nicolas Otamendi.
Benfica will achieve their first victory of the tournament on Friday if they are confronted with Auckland City.
Boca, meanwhile, will be confronted in Miami on Friday with the current group stoppers Bayern Munich.
