The co-owner of Chelsea, Todd Boehly, removed the fan protests on Thursday evening who preceded their last game in Stamford Bridge, because he insisted that attackers are not only for sale in the 'supermarket'.
Supporters showed their anger for Tuesday's 4-0 win over Southampton and that included one dollar bills for a banner aimed at Boehly. As the face of the original takeover of May 2022, the American billionaire was the biggest target during those demonstrations.
Boehly also used his address in London to play rumors about a gap between him and his co-owners Clearlake Capital, who are led by Behdad Eghbali and Jose Feliciano, although refused to confirm that the ownership setup will remain the same next year when asked immediately.
Boehly said about the criticism of fans: 'It's par for the course. The reality is the sooner you learn that you will not always keep all people happy, the freedom comes out of that.
'We try to implement a plan. The trend moves in the right direction. That's what really matters. '
Boehly spoke at the Financial Times Business of Football Summit after Chelsea's failure to add a goalscorer in the January window, left them without a single recognized striker.
“Strikers are hard to find,” he said. 'You don't go to the supermarket and say:' I'm going to get a striker. 'It is great skills and you must also have a fantastic mentality. '
On the strategy of Chelsea, Boehly continued: 'What we really thought of is how you put together a team that has the ability to stay together. When you read about the teams that were the dynasties over the years, they had superstar captains who really led them. What you are trying to find is that superstar captain. '
The last question asked by moderator Arash Massoudi van Boehly was whether the ownership will change in view of the conversation about disagreements between him and Clearlake. He replied: 'Listen, I cannot predict the future. If I could, I wouldn't talk to you here. '
