Bompastor: Chelsea must end Man City second leg with ‘no regrets’

Sonia Bompastor has encouraged her Chelsea players to end their Women's Champions League quarter-final second stage with Manchester City with “no regret”.

Chelsea is 2-0 in their last eight collision, while the brace of Vivianne Miedema ended the 31-game unbeaten run of the blues, all matches in the first stage.

In the result, Bompastor also lost for the first time since Emma Hayes take over in May last year, although Chelsea took revenge four days later.

The deceased winner of Erin Cuthbert saw the blues beat 2-1 with 2-1 in the Etihad Stadium last Sunday, making Bompastor moved closer to the Women's Super League title.

Thursday's collision at Stamford Bridge concludes four consecutive games between the two parties in all competitions, and Bompastor wants to end that run with a semi -final place.

“Man City has a lot of quality, and being able to beat them in a final and in the competition there is a good result against a really tough team,” Bompastor said.

“We know what to do. They won the first leg with two goals. We are in that situation, but we are convinced that we can turn things around.

“It is always more difficult if you lose two goals, but we are convinced, we are at home. It will be difficult and difficult, but this is what this club is about.

“I just want my players not to regret at the end of the game.”

This will be the second Champions League meeting between Chelsea and City after the 2-0 victory of the citizens in the first stage last week.

The blues had each won of their four games in the competition against colleague -British parties prior to that defeat.

However, Chelsea has won five of their last six home games against City in all competitions (L1), although they were defeated in the semi-final 2018-19 League Cup, the last time they organized them outside the WSL.

They are also eliminated from five of their six Champions League knockout phase tires when losing the first stage, with the exception of Bayern Munich in 2020-21.

And a part of that team four years ago, Millie Bright, who echoed Bompastor's thoughts for the competition, was said that her teammates should remain calm in the competition.

“It is a situation where you have to stay calm,” Bright added. “If you look over our latest versions, there are many positive points to take, especially the last game, which win the game, the second half performance.

“Yes, we are not in the position we would like to be, but we are in it. We have a very confidence in ourselves and it is not an impossible turnaround.

“We have the chance to bounce back and show the qualities and mentality that we have as a team. We have a lot of experience in our team, many leaders.

“It is important to stay in this situation, there is at least 90 minutes to play and that is enough time.”
